About Us

The Amathole District Municipality, named “Amathole” meaning “the calves of the Drakensberg” in Xhosa, reflects the pastoral heritage of its rural Xhosa communities, who graze their vibrant Nguni cattle along the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains. Situated in the Eastern Cape Province, Amathole is a region rich in cultural and natural significance, with a population of 885,102 (as of the latest census), growing from 880,118 in 2009 and projected to reach 910,000 by 2023. The district accounts for 12% of the province’s population, with a demographic composition of 52.7% females and 47.3% males.

Amathole is renowned for its four heritage routes, named after revered Xhosa kings and heroes: the Maqoma Route, Makana Route, Sandile Route, and Phalo Route. These routes celebrate the region’s deep cultural history and offer visitors an immersive experience of its traditions. The district spans diverse tourism regions, including the Wild Coast Route, known for ocean marine activities, game farming, and agriculture; the Frontier Country Route, offering game viewing, skydiving, fly-fishing, river-rafting, mountaineering, forestry, and a rich tapestry of battlefield heritage; and the Amatola Mountain Route, celebrated for its fauna, flora, waterfalls, and nature reserves. These assets position Amathole as a potential tourism hub, capable of delivering unparalleled cultural and natural experiences.

Despite its rich heritage, Amathole faces significant challenges, including persistent drought and high poverty levels. Addressing these requires a redefinition of development strategies to accelerate service delivery and improve community livelihoods. A key priority is investment in sustainable water solutions, which could simultaneously reduce unemployment and stimulate economic growth by creating jobs and supporting local industries. Central to the success of these initiatives is investment in education and skills development, enabling communities to actively participate in the economic value chain and contribute to the district’s prosperity.

The Amathole District Municipality is committed to leveraging its cultural and natural wealth while addressing socio-economic challenges through strategic governance, sustainable development, and community empowerment. By fostering partnerships and prioritizing innovative solutions, Amathole aims to enhance the quality of life for its residents and establish itself as a premier destination for cultural and eco-tourism in South Africa.
